Argentine federation denies its president was targeted by US authorities | OneFootball

The Argentine Football Association has rejected claims that president Claudio Tapia was targeted by US authorities. The federation said in a statement that he was not subject to legal action as he left the United States on Monday, after the World Cup final.

Claims had suggested FBI agents stopped Tapia and other AFA officials at the airport and seized phones and computers.

Assertions that Tapia and treasurer Pablo Toviggino were subpoenaed to testify were false, and any suggestion that their electronic devices were taken was also false.

It acknowledged, however, that the Southern District of Florida has issued a subpoena to a third party, requiring an appearance before a grand jury and the potential production of documents and communications relating to various individuals, including AFA officials. The identity and role of that person have not been disclosed.

In Argentina, the AFA faces several investigations, including an alleged money-laundering case that prompted a December search at its premises and at several top-flight clubs. A separate tax-evasion probe led to Tapia and four other AFA officials being placed under formal investigation in March.
