Arsenal dug deep to beat Chelsea 1-0 in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening, progresssing to the final 4-2 on aggregate.

Neither side created a clear chance until the 18th minute, when Piero Hincapie’s curling effort was parried away by Robert Sanchez.

After the half-hour mark, Gabriel’s long pass found Gabriel Martinelli, who looked to be through on goal, but Malo Gusto made a vital block to deny him a shot on goal.

Chelsea’s first shot on target came on 42 minutes, as Enzo Fernandez saw his shot saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga in what proved to be the final chance before the break.

The first genuine attempt in the second half came in the 77th minute. Martin Zubimendi floated a cross to Gabriel at the back post, but Marc Cucurella was at the right place to block his header.

At the other end, Cole Palmer crashed a free-kick into the wall as both sides pushed for a late goal.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Kai Havertz scored the winner on the counter, rounding Sanchez before finishing into an empty net.

Arsenal have now reached the Carabao Cup final for the first time since the 2017/18 season when they lost to Manchester City.

The Gunners could face the Cityzens again if they beat Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday in the other semi-final second leg.
