Sweden national team manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has jumped to the defence of Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The £63.5million summer signing from Sporting CP has been ever-present for the Gunners so far this season, starting all but one game across all competitions.

That said, the 27-year-old has now gone six games without scoring and it’s led to some criticism regarding his form and impact on matches when he’s not finding the back of the net.

However, Tomasson insists anyone questioning the importance of Gyokeres in this Arsenal setup doesn’t “understand football”.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, as per FotbollSkanalen, Tomasson said: “Viktor Gyokeres is in very good form at the moment and is very good.

“If people say he doesn’t have an impact (on matches), then they don’t understand football and don’t have a clue about football. He creates space for other players, works on the ball and makes runs.

Gyokeres is in the Sweden squad for the World Cup qualification double header against Switzerland and Kosovo.

Having drawn with Slovenia and lost to Kosovo last month, Tomasson’s side are already playing catch-up to the Swiss who lead the way in Group B with an 100 percent winning record after two games.
