More than 50 people were injured and 63 arrested after violent clashes in the stands halted Sunday’s Paraguayan clásico between Olimpia and Cerro Porteño in the 29th minute in Asuncion.
According to L'Équipe, police reported the injuries after disorder broke out early in the league match, which stood at 0-0.
Trouble escalated when visiting fans without tickets forced their way into the 40,000-seat Defensores del Chaco. They were confined to the north stand, then threw projectiles, prompting police to use tear gas and rubber bullets.
Crowd surges led to an emergency evacuation of the stadium, and frightened supporters ran onto the pitch.
A 22-year-old police officer was beaten, lost consciousness amid the clashes, and was due to undergo surgery on Monday.
Medical sources said most of those treated sustained minor injuries. The security chief for sporting events, commissioner Héctor Fernandez, said the perpetrators had already been identified.
