Atlas have moved to sign Adonis Frías, complicating Santos's talks with Racing that would have brought right-back Martirena to the club. The Mexican side have offered the defender a higher salary.
According to Diario Do Peixe, Santos await an official bid and are open to a permanent sale. The centre-back is valued at four million dollars, the sum Santos originally paid.
Talks are unresolved, but the picture currently favours Atlas. If Frías chooses Mexico, Martirena will not join Santos.
Santos had expected the 25-year-old to arrive on loan from Racing as part of the operation, but that plan has lost momentum.
Frías was left out of the 3-0 win at Vasco on Sunday at São Januário.
The uncertainty is also shaping finances. Santos had considered paying about R$ 12 million to Monaco to lift a Fifa transfer ban and register Martirena.
With no deal close or other signing secured, urgency to clear the Monaco debt has eased, and funds are being diverted to overdue image rights.
Santos remain interested in Atlético-MG midfielder Alexsander. Any progress, or another target, could see the Monaco debt prioritised to lift the ban and register reinforcements.
The ban relates to unpaid sums from the Jean Lucas transfer, totalling two point zero three two million euros, roughly R$ 12 million. Santos were sanctioned on 20 May 2025 after a CAS appeal was rejected, having missed a two million euros instalment due January 2025.
