Atletico Baleares and Atletico Madrid go head-to-head in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.
Diego Simeone’s men come into this match as favourites to advance from the round of 32 at Estadio Balear, but Atletico Baleares will be motivated to put on a showcase of an impressive performance after progressing to the round of 32 by defeating Espanyol in their last round of Copa Del Rey.
Atletico Baleares enter this contest without reported injury concerns, allowing head coach Luis Blanco to field his strongest available XI. Jaume Tovar remains the standout performer for Baleares, having scored 13 goals in 17 appearances this season and adding an assist in the Espanyol encounter.
Axel Bejarano Fernandez will continue his attacking duties alongside Tovar, while midfielder Jofre Cherta, who boasts two goals and one assist this season, will operate in midfield.
Atletico Madrid will rotate their squad for this Copa del Rey fixture, with Diego Simeone viewing the competition as a secondary priority to La Liga and the Champions League.
The Madrid side remains without key players, including Alex Baena, who suffered a left thigh muscle strain in the Barcelona match, and Jose Maria Gimenez, dealing with a thigh muscle injury. Marcos Llorente also continues his absence from the squad.
Antoine Griezmann is expected to return to the starting lineup after his impressive impact from the bench against Valencia, scoring the decisive winning goal in a 2-1 victory. The 34-year-old Frenchman has proven his value this season, with 204 career goals for the club.
Clement Lenglet, David Hancko, and Alexander Sorloth are all pushing for starts, with Sorloth having impressed recently in Atletico’s 3-2 Champions League victory over PSV Eindhoven, scoring and providing an assist.
Atletico Baleares have impressed considerably in their Copa del Rey campaign, securing back-to-back victories over higher-division opposition. Baleares most recently fell to a 3-1 defeat against Terrassa in their fourth-tier league campaign, yet they arrive at this fixture in decent overall form, having won four of their previous five matches.
The fourth-tier side has demonstrated remarkable cup form, having successfully eliminated both Gimnastic and La Liga side Espanyol to reach this stage, with their most recent victory coming via a 1-0 win over Espanyol, courtesy of a second-half strike from Jaume Tovar.
Diego Simeone’s side has demonstrated impressive resilience despite their recent inconsistencies in La Liga.
Following consecutive defeats to Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, Atletico Madrid registered a win recently over Valencia, marking their return to winning ways in the league.
The Madrid club currently occupy fourth position in La Liga with 34 points from 17 matches, positioning them nine points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Atletico Baleares: Rivas; Perez, Taffertshofer, Castell, Pol, Morillo; Miguelito, Bonet, Cherta; Tovar, Bejarano.
