Atletico Madrid claimed the inaugural Reconstruction cup in Libya after defeating Inter Milan 4 - 2 on penalties following 1 - 1 draw in regular time at the newly inaugurated Benghazi International Stadium on Saturday.
The match unfolded before vibrant crowd exceeding 40000 spectators. Carlos Martin opened the scoring for Atletico in the 34 minute with stunning left foot strike before Yann Aurel Bisseck leveled for Inter with fine header in the 59 minute.
Atletico goalkeeper Juan Musso emerged as the hero saving 2 penalty to hand Diego Simeone’s side the trophy in dramatic fashion.
The Spanish side lifted the cup amid scenes of jubilation in Libya’s second largest city.
The match was organized under the supervision of the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund FDRL in cooperation with the Libyan Football Federation, local authorities and European embassies.
The initiative aimed to showcase Libya’s readiness to host major events & promote sport as bridge for peace and cooperation.
Originally Barcelona were scheduled to compete but withdrew to manage fixture congestion refunding the 5 million euro participation fee.
Atletico Madrid stepped in to face Inter making the event symbolic prelude to their upcoming champions league meeting on 26 Nov.
