Atlético Madrid are exploring the possibility of bringing Théo Hernandez (27) back to the club this summer, with the France international reportedly keen to leave AC Milan before the final year of his contract.

According to L’Équipe, Hernández has emerged as a top priority for Diego Simeone’s side, who are keen to reinforce the left-back position ahead the 2025/26 campaign — one that includes a group-stage clash with Paris Saint-Germain at the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup in the United States later this month.

Hernandez, who has 38 caps and 2 goals for Les Bleus, came through Atlético’s academy before making a controversial switch to city rivals Real Madrid in 2017. Now, a return to Los Rojiblancos could be on the cards, especially with the player receptive to the club’s sporting project and nostalgic about his roots in Madrid.

However, negotiations with Milan are expected to be complex. The 2022 Serie A champions are not prepared to let Hernandez go on the cheap, despite his contract running out in June 2026. In addition, Saudi Arabian clubs have shown interest in the Frenchman and could outbid Atlético financially — though they may struggle to match the emotional and sporting pull of a return to Spain.GFFN | George Boxall
