FC Barcelona continued their incredible run with an impressive 5-2 win over Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League. The game was mostly positive, except for one instance when young defensive star Pau Cubarsi suffered a nasty blow to his face in the second half.

The 17-year-old had to be taken off and went into the tunnel with a bleeding face. It was confirmed after the game that the Spanish international received 10 stitches on his face to close the open wound but that he was okay.

At such a young age, not even 18 yet, Cubarsi is already establishing himself as one of the best central defenders in the world. Such has been his performance since the turn of the year, and one has almost gotten used to these displays that betray his age.

Barcelona, on their official Instagram handle, put out a post with the caption ‘Everything for Barca’ with three pictures of Pau Cubarsi’s bloodied face. The Spaniard reshared the post on his Instagram story with the quote:

“Everything for this crest.”

Cubarsi has already won over the Blaugrana fanbase with his performances and his warrior-esque effort last night only received him even more plaudits. It takes a lot of courage to put your face in the line of the play, knowing that a kick might be coming.

The positive thing with regards to the 17-year-old is that he doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of concussion. That is always the biggest worry after a blow to the head but Pau Cubarsi seems to be doing just fine.

However, it remains to be seen if Cubarsi is cleared to play at the Reale Arena this weekend. He is likely to have to wear a mask to protect his face and the medical team will have to determine if it is safe for him to take the field on the night.

If Cubarsi is ruled out, Barcelona will mostly have Sergi Dominguez start. The La Masia defender is talented but not at the level of his 17-year-old counterpart. Let’s wait and see how things play out in the coming days.
