Deco recently sat down with Catalunya Radio to talk about Barcelona’s recent form as well as Lamine Yamal, with the Barça sporting director notably calling the young attacker a ‘gift to the world’.
But other than Yamal, Deco also offered an update on Barcelona’s ongoing renewal efforts with Frenkie de Jong and Eric Garcia, with both players running out of contract at the end of the season.
The Barcelona sporting director was specifically asked about de Jong’s contract situation and why it is dragging so much.
“No, that’s not it. We have been talking with Frenkie for a while. He had personal changes with his agents, and we waited for that to be resolved,” he said when asked about whether adapting to a new salary scheme is causing the delay.
Deco went on to confirm that only small details are missing and that the club are trying to close the deal as soon as possible.
“He has always been clear with us that this matter has nothing to do with money. We are in the final stages, with only small details remaining. We will renew with him as soon as possible,” he said.

The Portuguese was also asked about Eric Garcia, who has been one of Barcelona’s standout players this season.
“The idea is to continue with him as long as he wants and understands the club’s vision, and this is a fact – of course, with negotiations, because every player has agents, and we have those who represent the club’s interests,” he said when asked about a potential renewal.
The Barcelona sporting director went on to heap praise on the former Man City starlet, implying that a new contract offer could be just around the corner.
“The interest is mutual: we are happy with Eric. For me, he is an example of overcoming adversity; he left here amidst criticism, turned everything around and is establishing himself as an important player on the pitch and in the dressing room,” he said.
In fact, Deco admitted that Barcelona are keen on extending the contract of Garcia, whose presence in the team will become even more important following Inigo Martinez’s shock departure.
“A young player, 24 or 25 years old, we are happy and want to renew his contract. We are talking, and the renewal will happen at the right time,” he concluded.
