Long past are the days of camaraderie between two of the biggest teams in Spain, as the off-field battle between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona has intensified significantly in the last few years, and seems to be only getting worse with every passing week.
In one of the latest developments in this regard, Real Madrid once again sent a report to UEFA, asking the top European footballing body to take punitive measures against Barcelona, irrespective of the judicial proceedings underway in Spain, for the payments made by the Blaugrana club to the former head of the CTA, Enriquez Negreira.
This episode came only a few days after UEFA had rejected an earlier dossier sent by the Merengues, citing the on-going judicial proceedings in Spain.
Now, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, Barcelona themselves have reacted strongly to this latest action from Real Madrid, and in an official statement, revealed that they have sent a formal letter to the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, the president of RFEF, Rafael Louzan, and the head of CTA, to take action against the recently reelected president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez.
The statement from the Catalan club runs as follows:
“The president of FC Barcelona, Rafael Yuste y Abel, today sent a formal letter to the presidents of La Liga, Javier Tebas; the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Rafael Louzán; and the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), Francisco Soto, regarding statements made by the president of Real Madrid CF, Florentino Pérez, during various public appearances on May 12 and 13. FC Barcelona urges La Liga, the RFEF, and the CTA to take action in response to Florentino Pérez’s statements.
FC Barcelona considers that these remarks, in addition to being false, seriously undermine the honor and image of the First Division league competition, as well as the refereeing body as a whole, and damage the reputation and credibility of Spanish professional football.
The Club urges the co-organizers of the competition and the referees to defend the reputation of their institutions—just as the Club recently did by filing a conciliation lawsuit—and asks the recipient entities, within the scope of their respective powers, to urgently adopt the appropriate institutional and legal measures against Mr. Pérez in order to defend the honor, integrity, and prestige of the institutions they represent and the competitions they organize.”
In this letter, Barcelona have referred to some of the comments made by Perez in one of his recent press conferences and also in a recent interview with El Chiringuito.
For now, it remains to be seen what the outcome would be of these actions taken by two of the biggest clubs in Spain, i.e., Real Madrid and Barcelona. But what is certain is that the feeling of animosity between them is only going to increase, at least in the near future, going forward. One can only hope that whatever the outcomes, these would only be beneficial for football and for sports in general.
