Barcelona eye Arsenal forward as Alvarez alternative | OneFootball

Barcelona are considering a move for Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres, as a potential alternative to Julian Alvarez.

The Spanish champions are eager to sign a centre-forward this summmer, with the Sweden international reportedly open to a move. Gyokeres joined Arsenal for a fee of £54m from Sporting CP last summer and scored 21 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions.

Despite his role in the club’s Premier League title success, an exit has not been ruled out after the 27-year-old failed to establish himself as an automatic starter. He started only 26 times in the Premier League.

Gyokeres was also named as a substitute during Arsenal’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. He appeared as an 82nd-minute substitute, with Arsenal eventually beaten on penalties.

According to El Nacional Catalonia, Barcelona are weighing up an approach. The La Liga side have made Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez their top target, but are unable to meet the current asking price.

Gyokeres is viewed as a more cost-effective alternative, with belief a deal can be done for around €60m (£51.5m). Barcelona are seeking a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, following his exit from the Camp Nou.

Arsenal have also been linked with Julian Alvarez and the sale of Gyokeres could help the club finance a deal.

The Gunners have been linked with offering the Swedish striker to Atletico in part-exchange for Alvarez, who is valued in Madrid in excess of £125m. Atletico rejected a €150m bid from rivals Real Madrid earlier in the summer.
