Tensions between Barcelona and Marc-Andre ter Stegen have reached an all-time high.

According to a report from AS, the club has decided to pause all talks with the goalkeeper after his refusal to sign a medical release form.

This form would have allowed La Liga’s medical panel to review his injury and decide how long he would be sidelined.

Without that confirmation, the club cannot classify his injury in a way that would let them unlock a portion of his salary for Financial Fair Play, something they were hoping to do to register new signing Joan García.

Club president Joan Laporta had previously admitted during Barcelona’s pre-season trip to South Korea that using Ter Stegen’s long-term absence was one of the most direct ways to create salary space.

However, he also made it clear that this route was not their first choice. Barcelona were hoping to handle the situation more amicably, expecting Ter Stegen to cooperate eventually. But the goalkeeper’s refusal has thrown a wrench into those plans.

Legal action amid growing frustration

The situation has now escalated to a point where the club is preparing to take legal steps, as Barcelona’s board is angry and disappointed with their captain’s stance.

They had initially scheduled a meeting with Ter Stegen this week to resolve the issue. But after his continued resistance, the club has now decided to abandon all attempts at dialogue.

Barcelona plans to involve their legal team to begin disciplinary action against the German international.

According to the agreement between La Liga and the Spanish Players’ Association (AFE), Ter Stegen’s refusal could be considered a breach of discipline. As a result, the club may file an official report with La Liga.

This incident is rare in Spanish football, and the breakdown in trust between Ter Stegen and the club suggests a difficult road ahead for both sides.
