Barcelona are already putting in place a succession plan for when Hansi Flick leaves the club, and are not hanging about in doing so. It was revealed last week that Como manager Cesc Fabregas has been earmarked as their preferred option to take over from Flick, and they have already made moves to secure his future.
Fabregas has been linked to plenty of top jobs over the past two years, and Inter seemingly held an interest in appointing him after the departure of Simone Inzaghi. Chelsea have also been credited with interest in him after sacking first Enzo Maresca and then Liam Rosenior. Qualifying Como for the Champions League for the first time in their history this season, he has put his name in conversations as one of the brightest young managers in the game.

It was explained last week that Fabregas had already been informed by Barcelona that if he keeps his agenda open for the 2028-29 season, coinciding with the end of Hansi Flick’s contract, then he could well have a job waiting for him at the club he came through at. Now Diario AS have explained that advisor Alejandro Echevarria, whom Fabregas holds a good relationship with, traveled to Italy a few months ago to speak to Fabregas. His job was to communicate their proposal to him, and hopefully persuade Fabregas that he should avoid locking himself into a long-term deal elsewhere.
It is worth noting that Flick has shown no desire to leave Barcelona, and while he continues to be successful, they will likely try to hang onto him. That said, it has always been suggested by Flick that he does not want to commit himself to the club too far in advance, preferring instead to work on short-term deals. His current deal, until 2028, is the longest in advance that he has locked himself in at Barcelona.
