There is much excitement at Barcelona next season, with Anthony Gordon joining the team and, more importantly, Hansi Flick signing a contract extension until 2028.

However, the German has hinted in the past that he may not be here at Barcelona for long. And quite naturally, there is much anxiety at Barça as to whether or not Flick will continue beyond 2028.

Keeping that in mind, the club are already at work to find the successor for Flick and everything suggests they have targeted one man: Cesc Fabregas.

Barcelona’s chosen one

According to Diario AS, Fabregas has the full backing of the club’s Sporting Commission, led by Deco, to succeed Flick when the German’s tenure eventually comes to an end.

The report adds that Barcelona sent a trusted representative, Alejandro Echevarria, to Como several months ago to effectively lay the groundwork for a future deal and ensure Fabregas would be open to a move from 2028 onwards.

Contact has also been made directly with the former Barcelona midfielder, with the club’s proposal being that any future agreement should include a clause allowing him to leave Como for the Camp Nou.

Fabregas’s work at the modest Italian club has been nothing short of remarkable. He guided Como from a recent promotion to Champions League qualification this season.

Luis Enrique ruled out

One name that has been taken out of the equation entirely is Luis Enrique, despite his back-to-back Champions League triumphs with PSG.

Beyond the financial impossibility of matching his Paris salary, the primary concern is his approach to dressing room management.

Luis Enrique operates with a tightly controlled inner circle and would expect figures like Echevarria, considered a key presence around the first team, to step away entirely.

That is not a scenario Barcelona are willing to entertain.
