FC Barcelona are set to step on the pitch for the 2026-27 season with a team significantly changed from the one that won the La Liga title in the 2025-26 season. Changes are guaranteed in the forward line, where Robert Lewandowski has already left the team and another addition has also been made, i.e., the English winger Anthony Gordon.
However, the Polish striker is not going to be the only forward from the last season’s Blaugrana team who would not be playing for Hansi Flick next season. This is particularly the case as MARCA reports that the Catalan club has already decided not to exercise the €30 million purchase option on Marcus Rashford, and thus, the Englishman would not be at Barcelona for the 2026-27 season.
Gordon’s signing was already a clear signal that the Blaugranes’ need of and interest in Rashford has reduced, especially as Gordon also plays the best in the same position as his compatriot, while Raphinha is clearly going to be the starter for Flick next season.
Still, up to now, the Catalans had not ruled out the possibility of the Manchester United player’s continuity, especially in case of a serious injury to one of their forwards while on international duty. However, the deadline for the purchase clause expires on Monday, 15th June, and thus, there is almost no time left to delay a decision on this matter.
Two factors played a key role in the Blaugrana side choosing Gordon over Rashford. Firstly, Flick was impressed by the former’s defensive work, especially his pressing. Secondly, the latter is also three and a half years older than the former. Meanwhile, keeping in view their wages and amortization costs, both of them would have cost the club a similar amount.
