With the long-term injury of Andreas Christensen and the absence of Ronald Araujo, who is currently on a leave of absence to recover from mental health issues, FC Barcelona are once again exploring the market to strengthen their defensive line.
The centre-back position is strategic for the club both in the immediate January window and with an eye on the summer, as the Blaugranes seek a long-term solution rather than a temporary fix. However, financial constraints and the club’s salary cap situation make an immediate signing challenging.
In this regard, they have been linked with several notable names, but a report from SPORT has named two promising young defenders shining in the Bundesliga, who they claim are being closely monitored by the Blaugranes.
One of them is Konstantinos Koulierakis, the 22-year-old Greek defender at VfL Wolfsburg. A left-footed centre-back, Koulierakis has impressed in Germany with his positioning, composure on the ball, passing range, vision, and leadership.
Signed by Wolfsburg in 2024 for almost €12 million from PAOK, he has quickly established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s standout defenders. Liverpool have also shown interest in him, but he is expected to remain in Germany until the summer. Koulierakis’ style of play aligns closely with Barcelona’s philosophy of building from the back.
The other target is Luka Vuskovic, a right-footed defender signed by Tottenham Hotspur from Hajduk Split in January of last year. Currently on loan at Hamburg, he has enjoyed a breakthrough season, with his performances raising his valuation to €40 million.
Despite growing interest in both players, a January transfer is unlikely due to financial constraints. Barcelona appear intent on targeting a young centre-back with long-term potential rather than opting for a short-term veteran solution. The coming months will likely determine whether either Koulierakis or Vuskovic becomes part of the club’s defensive future.
