Barcelona “outraged” with Frenkie de Jong as six-month injury timeline revealed | OneFootball

Earlier this week, Barcelona were rocked by the news that Frenkie de Jong has suffered a serious knee injury. The midfielder was carrying an issue during the Netherlands’ final two matches at the 2026 World Cup, after that bringing forward his return to Catalonia to undergo medical tests, it’s been revealed that he could be set for a significant spell on the sidelines.

The belief is that de Jong will miss at least 3-4 months of action after aggravating the knee issue that he sustained at the World Cup, which would have him on track to return in October or November. However, a new report from Diario AS has claimed that Barcelona will be without the Dutch midfielder for as many as six months, which would mean he will not play again until 2027.

As of now, Barcelona are not able to get a clear picture on how long de Jong will be out. They currently cannot perform an MRI due to internal bleeding in his knee, so it will not be until later this week that the full extent is known, but there are fears that the ligaments are affected, hence the fear that he could be out for as long as six months.

Understandably, there is a lot of anger from Barcelona officials about the situation with de Jong. Their fury has been directed at Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman, his medical staff and also the player himself. They recognise that the nature of the World Cup meant that the situation had to be forced, but they cannot believe that all parties allowed the injury to get as bad as it has.
