It is not easy for a new player to come into this FC Barcelona team and establish themself as a starter. For most players, there is a lot of time and effort that goes into their game before they can become regulars for the team. Fortunately for Barcelona, however, almost all of their players seem ready as it is.
Previously, Inaki Pena stepped in when German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was injured. For quite some time, the Spaniard showcased that he was completely ready to defend the Barcelona goal, and he had the trust of Hansi Flick backing him up as well.
Soon after, however, he lost his starting place to new arrival Wojciech Szczesny. The Polish goalkeeper took over since the start of the new year and he has been backed by the team’s coach publicly as his first-choice goalkeeper.
As he continues to play and start more games, the Pole is certainly paying back the trust and faith shown in him by the Barcelona coach. According to Mundo Deportivo, his recent performance now marks the player’s sixth clean sheet from the eleven games that he has played so far for the club.
In the recent win over UD Las Palmas, the Pole was essentially an impenetrable wall for La Blaugrana. Beyond just the clean sheet in the 2-0 victory, he also completed every single one of the 26 passes that he attempted in the game as well, showcasing that he is clearly improved that aspect of his game as well.
Previously, he managed to keep clean sheets against the likes of Deportivo Alaves and Rayo Vallecano in La Liga, Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup, and against UD Barbastro and Valencia in the Copa del Rey as well.
Moreover, Barcelona is yet to taste defeat with the Polish goalkeeper in between the sticks as well. In terms of his record so far, he has helped the team win 10 games and draw only once when he has started the game. For now, Flick’s trust in him seems to be completely justified.
