The goalkeeper situation at FC Barcelona for the upcoming season is becoming clearer. The signing of Joan Garcia is almost completed, after the Catalans paid his €25 million release clause on Friday, with only the official announcement pending.

The 24-year-old Spaniard will arrive with the status of first-choice keeper, replacing club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Next on the agenda for Barcelona is to finalise the contract extension of Wojciech Szczęsny, whose current deal expires at the end of the season.

Szczesny renewal to be confirmed after Garcia signing

Now, according to SPORT, Barcelona will confirm Wojciech Szczesny’s renewal after the official announcement of Joan Garcia’s arrival, expected in the middle of next week.

An agreement between Barcelona and Szczęsny has been fully reached. The goalkeeper will remain at the club for one more year, with an option to extend the contract until 2027.

Negotiations between both parties have taken place in recent weeks, in parallel with developments in Barcelona’s ongoing goalkeeper dilemma.

With the renewal of the 35-year-old, the sporting department strengthens its decision to rely on the duo of Garcia and Szczesny for the 2025/26 season.

The Polish international will act as the second-choice goalkeeper, placing further pressure on Ter Stegen, whose current contract runs until 2028.

As far as the German is concerned, he has refused to leave thus far, but Barcelona are leveraging the 2026 World Cup as a factor.

Ter Stegen must now decide whether to stay at the club, risking his place as Germany’s starting goalkeeper, or seek a move elsewhere in order to secure more playing time.

Meanwhile, Inaki Pena appears set to depart from the club, having fallen out of favour under Hansi Flick.
