Before Benfica Clash.. What Did Alonso Say About Mourinho’s Return?
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso described Jose Mourinho as "very important" to the club’s history, days after the Portuguese manager made shock return to Benfica.
Benfica turned to Mourinho after sacking Bruno Lage following Champions league defeat to Qarabag.
His comeback adds extra spice to the upcoming clash with Real Madrid on 29 Jan 2026, the final matchday of the group stage.
Mourinho led Real Madrid between 2010 & 2013 with Alonso part of his squad.
Together they claimed La liga in 2012 with record 100 point and 121 goal. The Portuguese also delivered the Copa del Rey against Barcelona & the Spanish Super cup.
Although Mourinho never captured the Champions league with Madrid (falling 3 time in the semi finals) his impact remained immense.
He built the foundations for later triumphs under Carlo Ancelotti & Zinedine Zidane leaving strong ties with Florentino Perez and the fans.
Speaking before Madrid’s league match with Espanyol, Alonso recalled their shared journey:
''It was 3 very intense years and he was very important. He's great affection for this club''
He added that the Champions league meeting would be "special'' for his former coach.
