Benfica ‘are in the race’ for Raheem Sterling, according to local reports. The 31-year-old is a free agent after leaving Chelsea, so he can be registered despite Portugal’s winter window being closed.

Samsunspor of Türkiye have also shown interest. Club president Yuksel Yildirim said they had spoken to Sterling, adding that they have not reached the stage of making a formal offer.

José Mourinho is understood to have asked for reinforcements in the Englishman’s mould, and the board are intensifying efforts to reach an understanding with the player. Any move would still hinge on a final agreement.

Sterling, valued at €5 million, had been out of favour at Chelsea this season and ultimately terminated his deal.

He spent last season on loan at Arsenal, scoring one goal and making five assists in 28 appearances.
