Birmingham City look set to face competition from Celtic in the race to appoint Thomas Frank

Birmingham City will be spending the 2026/27 season in the Championship, having fallen well short of the expectations set upon them after a historic campaign in League One last time around.

Birmingham's fate is sealed for next season, with the Blues preparing to spend next year in the second tier once again despite undertaking lavish spending throughout both windows and voicing aspirations of competing for successive promotions.

Chris Davies' side sit 12 points off the play-offs and 13 points above the relegation zone as things stand with three games to go, making it mathematically impossible for them to be promoted or relegated now.

Many Blues supporters will be disappointed with how this campaign has played out, especially considering the success they endured last year, amassing 111 points in League One, breaking the EFL points record in the process of romping to the third-tier title.

With £50 million spent across the past two years, Blues owners will have certainly been hoping for more, putting Davies' position under serious scrutiny heading into the summer.

It was exclusively revealed by Football League World on Monday morning that Birmingham were plotting an ambitious move for former Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank, and could now be set to face competition for the Dane's signature from north of the border after recent news.

Celtic to join Birmingham City in bold move for Thomas Frank

It was revealed by sources to FLW that Birmingham were preparing to make an incredible move for Frank, who has been out of work since being dismissed from Tottenham Hotspur in February.

Frank has previous experience of managing in the Championship with Brentford, having been the man to guide the Bees to the Premier League for the first time in 2021, having taken charge of 126 games in total in the second tier.

His spell at Tottenham ended in disaster, as most seem to do, and whether he would be open to returning to the Championship at this stage of his career remains to be seen.

Birmingham appear to be weighing up a bid to lure him to St Andrews should they decide to part ways with Chris Davies, but now, as revealed by FootballFancast, they may face competition from Scottish side Celtic for his signature.

Celtic have had their own managerial issues this season, with Brendan Rodgers departing the club, and Wilfried Nancy's appointment being an unmitigated disaster in its own right, leaving veteran Martin O'Neill in charge for the remainder of the season, as they prepare to target a new permanent boss this summer.

Frank has appeared high up on their list of potential targets, as the Hoops are set to jostle it out with Birmingham this summer over the signature of Frank.

The Blues will need to decide the future of Davies first and foremost before any formal approach for Frank can be made, and with just three games to go, that decision will likely be made sooner rather than later.

Given that Birmingham has spent over £50 million on incomings across the past two years, it remains to be seen what sort of transfer budget they will be heading into the summer with, and whether it will be enough to see Frank drop to the second tier.

Blues' owners have made no secret of their ambition to take the club to the top flight, and have laid out plans for a new 62,000-seater stadium, something which they will no doubt be using as a means to convince Frank to make the move to England's second city.

Celtic will put up stiff competition with Birmingham to try and lure Frank to Scotland, though what his preferred destination of the two, if any, at this stage, remains to be seen.

Chris Davies' Birmingham City future has been plunged into doubt after the latest Thomas Frank links

Davies' future at St Andrews appears to be clouded in significant doubt, especially after the latest links with Frank.

The 41-year-old has failed to kick on with Birmingham in the Championship, and having been unable to mount a serious push for the play-off places, his job is under serious scrutiny heading into the summer.

If Birmingham are indeed plotting a move for Frank, it can only spell bad news for Davies, with his current employers actively looking elsewhere for an alternative.

Time will tell his fate soon enough, but for now, Davies must block out the outside noise and focus on finishing the season as strongly as possible.
