Scotland international Dykes’ stoppage-time header sealed a 1-0 victory over Swansea City on Saturday, ending Blues’ three-game wait for a goal and stretching their unbeaten league run at home to 28 matches.

While the result provided a boost for Chris Davies’ side, it also sparked nostalgia for a familiar figure now playing his football elsewhere.

While current Blues players revelled in the moment, attentions quickly turned to a familiar name.

Alfie May, who left Birmingham for Huddersfield Town early in the summer transfer window, took to X to congratulate Dykes.

His brief post - “Lyndon Dykes [two heart eyes emojis] bagsman the boy” - was widely shared among Birmingham supporters and prompted a flurry of replies urging him to return to St Andrew’s.

The 32-year-old striker spent just one season at St/ Andrew’s but left a strong impression, scoring 17 goals in 57 appearances in all competitions and playing a key role in Birmingham’s record League One title triumph.

He had arrived from Charlton Athletic, where he was the division’s top scorer in 2023/24 with 23 goals, and had already proved his pedigree at Cheltenham Town, notching 43 league goals across two seasons.

May signed a three-year deal with Huddersfield in July and has started steadily, registering two goals and two assists in his first nine appearances.

The Terriers currently sit fifth in League One after a goalless draw with Burton Albion on Saturday.

While May focuses on his new challenge in West Yorkshire, many Birmingham supporters have made it clear they would welcome his return. His message of support for Dykes was quickly met with a stream of replies urging him to come back to the club.

One Blues fan responded directly to May’s post with the words: “Big mistake selling you.” Another supporter echoed similar sentiments: “Would have you back any day of the week”

Perhaps the most striking reaction came from a fan who simply pleaded: “Come home king.”

The comments were not isolated cases. Scroll through May’s mentions and a clear theme emerges - Birmingham fans, only months after waving him off to West Yorkshire, would be eager to see him back in royal blue, despite the fact he's only scored two League One goals so far from his nine Huddersfield appearances.

For now, Birmingham’s focus will be on their current strike force, with Dykes showing glimpses of what he can offer after stepping off the bench to secure victory over Swansea.

Birmingham’s decision to part ways with May was framed as a pragmatic step in reshaping the squad for Championship survival.
