Bobby Tambling, the former Chelsea striker, has died aged 84. According to L'Équipe, he passed away overnight from Wednesday to Thursday.
A Chelsea youth product, Tambling spent 11 seasons in the first team from 1959 to 1970, making 370 appearances and scoring 202 goals. His haul made him the club’s record scorer for four decades, until Frank Lampard overtook him in 2013 with 211 goals.
He still holds the record for most goals in a single match, five.
Tambling won three England caps and scored one goal. After leaving Chelsea he had three seasons at Crystal Palace, then finished his playing career in Ireland over six years. He also coached there, notably at Crosshaven AFC from 1985 to 2012.
Crosshaven, based in Cork, paid tribute on X, describing him as a true Chelsea legend and a wonderful person. The message spoke of a huge void and of those who knew him feeling better, kinder and richer for it.
