Rasmus Hojlund will have a release clause worth a reported €85m written into his Napoli contract if his loan move from Manchester United is made permanent, but further details surrounding both the release clause and Napoli’s obligation to buy have recently come to light.
Hojlund joined Napoli on loan with a potential obligation to buy in a deal worth a total of €50m at the end of the summer transfer window. The former Atalanta striker was brought in from Manchester United following the injury to Romelu Lukaku, which is expected to keep the Belgian out for three to four months.
According to updates from Calciomercato.com, Napoli are paying €6m to have the Denmark international on loan for the season, slightly higher than the €5m fee that had originally been reported, and will have an option to buy for a further €44m.

That option to buy will become an obligation in a number of different circumstances, linked to the number of appearances Hojlund makes this season, the number of goals he scores this campaign and Napoli’s qualification for the 2026-27 Champions League.
If the option to buy does become an obligation, Hojlund will receive a five-year contract, running until the summer of 2031, and will earn a net salary of around €5m per season.

If that does happen, there will also be an €85m release clause included in Hojlund’s contract. That will be valid from 2027 onwards, ensuring that Napoli get at least two years worth of action out of their new centre-forward.
The €85m release clause will be payable over three instalments, which means that teams will be able to purchase Hojlund outright for three separate payments of just over €28.3m.
