However, the defence still needs reshuffling. Julian Ryerson is suspended after his fifth yellow card at RB Leipzig, while centre-backs Niklas Sule and Filippo Mane remain sidelined with thigh injuries until early March.

Kovac has urged his players to “be brave in possession and keep the ball for long spells” against Bayern, insisting they will field “eleven players who will give their all” to beat the champions in front of the Yellow Wall.

Bayern Munich team news

Alphonso Davies (hamstring) and teenage defender Cassiano Kiala (knee) are both ruled out, while Hiroki Ito has suffered a thigh strain in training and is expected to miss the trip to Dortmund.

There is also a question mark over Manuel Neuer. The goalkeeper tore a calf muscle against Werder Bremen and has since halted a training session due to further discomfort. Jonas Urbig is in line to start again if Neuer is not passed fit.

Bayern will probably start with Urbig in goal behind a back four of Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanisic; Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic in midfield; Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Luis Diaz supporting Harry Kane up front.

Form

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund’s last five competitive games show four wins and a draw before defeat to Atalanta in Europe. League victories over Wolfsburg and Mainz, a 2-0 home win against Atalanta in the first leg, and a comeback 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig thanks to Fabio Silva’s stoppage-time equaliser.

Despite their European exit, Kovac’s team are on a 16-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga. Their only league defeat this season coming away to Bayern on Matchday 7. Borussia remain the only side still unbeaten at home this season with 29 points from 11 Bundesliga fixtures at Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia is set to lineup with Gregor Kobel in goal behind a back three of Waldemar Anton, Nico Schlotterbeck and Ramy Bensebaini, with Yan Couto and Daniel Svensson as wing-backs, Jobe Bellingham and Felix Nmecha in central midfield, and an attacking trio of Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and top scorer Serhou Guirassy.

Bayern Munich

Vincent Kompany’s side beat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2 last weekend, with Harry Kane scoring twice to move to 28 league goals, already surpassing his 26-goal haul from the entire 2024/25 campaign.

Bayern are also unbeaten in 20 consecutive Bundesliga away games across two seasons (nine wins and two draws this term), making them the league’s outstanding away side.

Predicted lineups

Borussia Dortmund: Kobel; Anton, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Couto, Bellingham, Nmecha, Svensson; Adeyemi, Brandt; Guirassy

Bayern Munich: Urbig; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Stanisic; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Musiala, Diaz; Kane
