Botafogo close to Newton sale to Santos | OneFootball

Botafogo are close to selling midfielder Newton to Santos on the final day of the transfer window, with details still to be finalised. According to Globo.com, the clubs are negotiating 70% of the 26-year-old’s rights.

The fee under discussion is between three and three and a half million euros, around R$ 18.1 million to R$ 21.2 million at current rates.

Payment is being discussed as an offset against a debt Botafogo owe Santos from the signing of defender Jair.

Newton was requested by coach Cuca, and Santos are racing to complete the move. He suffered a right shoulder injury against Flamengo in the Brasileirão on 14 March and is out until early April.

He joined Botafogo in 2024 after leaving Jacuipense and spent time on loan at Criciúma. Under Martín Anselmi he broke through in early 2026 and even filled in at centre-back before reverting to midfield after reinforcements arrived. He has made 69 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
