Breel Embolo not cleared to travel with Switzerland to United States | OneFootball

Switzerland flew to the United States on Tuesday without Breel Embolo, after the Rennes forward’s ESTA travel authorisation was placed under further review.

The Swiss FA said his ESTA had been approved earlier in the day, but at 10:30 they were informed the application was again subject to additional checks. The federation said they are liaising with the authorities and expect him to join later on Tuesday or on Wednesday.

The squad assembled at the airport at 11:00 and left shortly after midday. One player was not on board, Breel Embolo.

On 21 April, Embolo was definitively convicted of multiple threats linked to a 2018 fight, receiving a suspended pecuniary penalty of 45 day-fines at 3,000 Swiss francs. It is not clear whether that conviction influenced the administrative change.

ESTA is an automated system used to determine eligibility to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Programme, and to assess potential law enforcement or security risks.
