Vasco have handed permanent assistant Bruno Lazaroni a pay rise in recent days after he rejected an offer from Corinthians to work with Fernando Diniz.
According to Globo.com, Diniz, formerly Vasco head coach, invited him to take the same role at the São Paulo club, but Lazaroni declined.
The pay rise had already been planned in Vasco's budget, initially scheduled between May and June. Corinthians' proposal prompted the club to bring it forward.
Lazaroni is the son of Sebastião Lazaroni, a Carioca champion with Vasco in 1987 and 1988. Sebastião also coached Brazil at the 1990 World Cup and won the 1989 Copa América.
He is regarded as a key link between the head coach and the players, involved in every training session and trip.
