Matchday 18 capped a breathless Englische Woche, with late drama, a dismissal and a tightening relegation fight. As reported by Get German Football News, Eintracht sacked Dino Toppmöller and Hoffenheim climbed to third.
Eintracht acted after a 3-3 draw with Werder Bremen on Friday, when Ansgar Knauff made it 3-3 in the 94th minute. Toppmöller said he wished to continue, accepted the decision and was proud of the past two and a half years. With four without a win, seventh place and the worst defence outside the bottom two, pressure told.
Still in the Champions League, Eintracht could attract Marco Rose, Edin Terzic, Roger Schmidt, or former Bundesliga bosses Sandro Wagner, Bo Svensson and Adi Hütter.
Hoffenheim’s momentum grew, a 5-1 midweek win over Borussia Mönchengladbach followed by a 1-0 success at Bayer Leverkusen. Christian Ilzer’s side visit Eintracht next.
Borussia Dortmund edged St. Pauli after Ricky-Jade Jones equalised on 72 minutes, then conceded a stoppage-time penalty that captain Emre Can converted in the sixth added minute. Niko Kovač spoke of the drama and admitted the game should have been sealed earlier. He added the win makes their London trip easier.
Bayern Munich hit five after the break to overturn 1-0 at RB Leipzig, Micheal Olise with the pick, and Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane, Jonathan Tah and Aleksander Pavlovic also scoring, as Jamal Musiala returned. Köln beat Mainz 05 2-1, and there were draws between Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim, Hamburg and Gladbach, Stuttgart and Union Berlin, and Augsburg and Freiburg.
