Burnley's manager search has dominated the minds of Clarets supporters ahead of the club's Championship return for the 2026/27 campaign, with the East Lancashire outfit now representing the only second-tier side with a vacancy in the dugout.

The Clarets' protracted pursuit of a successor to Scott Parker is now more than three months deep, with the former Fulham and AFC Bournemouth boss having been relieved of his duties with four matches to spare from the previous term.

Burnley were already relegated by that point, but the prospect of continuity heading into a third Championship campaign inside five yearrs under a manager who has three second-tier promotions on his CV - one of which was achieved at Turf Moor just last year - didn't appeal to the club's key decision-makers as a change of direction was elected.

Though supporters may have duly anticipated a swift appointment in light of Parker's sudden departure, it hasn't played out in any such fashion and the club remain on the search for a new permanent managerial appointment as Mike Jackson continues to oversee proceedings on an interim basis.

There have been a number of rumours, whispers, twists and turns - but what's actually going on with Burnley's manager hunt right now? Football League World takes a close look...

Burnley could be closing in on new manager appointment

At long last, it now appears as though a new breakthrough has emerged and increasingly disgruntled Clarets fans may not have to wait too much longer to see Parker's replacement land in Lancashire.

That's because a vital update has been reported over the weekend by the Burnley Express, where it is claimed that an appointment could be made in time for Tuesday's pre-season trip to the United States.

By this late stage, that timescale may not be too likely.

However, the report has stated that Burnley's efforts to replace Parker and install a new manager ahead of the ever-approaching 26/27 campaign have taken strides in recent times, so much so that owner Alan Pace has been basing himself at the club's training ground.

Exactly who could be rocking up at Burnley, mind you, remains a mystery. That report also notes that the Clarets' preferred candidate is unclear despite the likes of Sebastien Pocognoli, Steve Cooper and Ole Werner featuring favourably high in the bookie's odds.

Burnley have been linked with many managers in recent months

As mentioned, many bosses have garnered links with the vacant Turf Moor hot seat following Parker's exit in April.

One name that previously refused to go away was Steven Gerrard's, with the ex-Rangers and Aston Villa boss having been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League side in January of last year.

However, Gerrard appears to have since moved out of contention to take over at the Championship promotion hopefuls and his name has not been touted for some time.

Brian Barry-Murphy, having led Cardiff City to promotion from League One while earning mass plaudits for an attack-minded, youth-centred approach, has also been of reported interest to Burnley, but links away from the Welsh capital are nothing new for the Irishman - who looks set to remain in situ and lead the Bluebirds' Championship return next time out.

John Eustace, meanwhile, was reportedly among the favourites for the job in May. Similarly to Barry-Murphy, though, the ex-Blackburn Rovers boss is overseeing an exciting, upwardly-mobile project at Pride Park and seems more-than-content with his present surroundings.

The biggest development, however, involved Craig Bellamy.

A former assistant of Vincent Kompany's during the Belgian's reign at Turf Moor, Bellamy had been set to return to the club months after failing to guide Wales to this summer's World Cup, only for a dramatic U-turn to take place at the final stage owing to reported complications regarding the make-up of the 46-year-old's coaching staff.

After missing out on Bellamy's return, it's said that Burnley tried and failed with a subsequent approach for Rob Edwards, who recently became available following his shock sacking from Championship rivals Wolves.

Burnley also reportedly failed with an approach for Tommy Elphick, with the ex-Bournemouth defender having since joined Andoni Iraola's staff at Liverpool.

Burnley need to get a new manager ASAP

Following no shortage of links, approaches and near misses across a drawn-out three-month hunt, Burnley supporters will love the news that a new appointment at Turf Moor may finally be imminent.
