Calum McFarlane makes soft denial about Xabi Alonso staff claims | OneFootball

Calum McFarlane has been speaking about the appointment of Xabi Alonso and how the mood at the club is following the news.

Calum McFarlane took Chelsea’s press conference this morning, the first since the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new permanent manager.

The interim was asked what the mood was like at the club following the news:

“Yeah, really exciting news. Great coach, massive pedigree. Yeah, really excited for the club. We’re all looking forward to working with them,” the caretaker said.

Chelsea coach denies he’s thought about job on Alonso’s staff

All of that implies that McFarlane will be staying on as an assistant to Alonso, and that seems to be the case. But the coach denied that had yet been put to him:

“I haven’t thought about that,” he said when asked about it.

“There is so much to prepare for. There is so much to play for and answer. But my focus is always on the next game and the next training session.”

But other sources, including Simon Johnson at the Athletic, are saying that McFarlane will indeed be in the mix under the new man.
