Dominic Calvert-Lewin will learn on Friday 22 May whether he makes Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup. The federation announced that the list will be named that day, leaving the Leeds United striker two further club games to impress.
Calvert-Lewin earned a March recall after strong club form, then logged his first England minutes since 2021 as a second-half substitute in the Wembley friendly against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay. He subsequently departed the camp before the Japan game as Tuchel reduced numbers, with his return to Leeds pre-planned while others withdrew injured.
England went on to lose 1-0 to Japan in the month’s second friendly.
Between now and the announcement, Calvert-Lewin can push his case in Monday night’s Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur, then the following Sunday’s penultimate fixture of the season at home to Brighton.
Tuchel will name a 26-player squad for a tournament staged in Canada, Mexico and USA from 11 June to 19 July, and will discuss his picks on a live Wembley show. The squad will then head to Florida for a pre-World Cup camp, facing New Zealand on Saturday 6 June at 9pm BST and Costa Rica on Wednesday 10 June at 9pm BST. England are scheduled to meet Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday 17 June at 9pm BST, then Ghana in Boston on Tuesday 23 June at 9pm BST, before Panama in New Jersey on Saturday 27 June at 10pm BST.
