Canada made World Cup history with a ruthless 6–0 demolition of Qatar, as Jonathan David scored the first hat-trick by a Canadian player in the tournament's history. Two red cards reduced Qatar to nine men as the hosts recorded their maiden World Cup victory. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Canada v Qatar.

Winners

Jonathan David (Canada)

Jonathan David delivered a historic hat-trick performance that broke multiple Canadian World Cup records. His three goals came at crucial moments: a 29th-minute volley from a deflection, a close-range finish at 45+3' after Cyle Larin's header was saved, and a composed left-footed strike at 90+2' to complete his treble.

Beyond the goals, David was a constant threat throughout, recording eight shots with five on target. His seventh-minute effort was well saved by Mahmoud Abunada, and he had a 40th-minute strike blocked. The striker's movement and positioning repeatedly created problems for Qatar's backline as he combined effectively with Larin in attack.

David's hat-trick extended his record as Canada's all-time leading scorer to 42 goals and made him the first Canadian to score three times in a World Cup match. His performance was the driving force behind his nation's first ever World Cup victory and a result that sent Canada to the top of Group B.

Nathan-Dylan Saliba (Canada)

Nathan-Dylan Saliba made an extraordinary impact after entering the match in the 57th minute as a replacement for the seriously injured Ismaël Koné. Within seven minutes of his introduction, the substitute had curled a brilliant direct free kick inside the post to make it 4–0, becoming the first player to score directly from a free kick at the 2026 World Cup.

Saliba's goal celebration carried emotional significance as he held up Koné's number 8 shirt, provided by teammates on the bench, paying tribute to the player whose injury brought him onto the pitch. His set-piece quality added another dimension to Canada's attack as Qatar struggled to contain the hosts with only nine men remaining.

The substitute's contribution was not limited to his goal. At 90+2', Saliba drove forward and struck a right-footed shot from the edge of the area that deflected into Jonathan David's path, providing the assist for the striker's hat-trick goal. His 35-minute cameo proved one of the most impactful substitute performances of the tournament.

Loser

Assim Madibo (Qatar)

Assim Madibo's 53rd-minute challenge on Ismaël Koné will define Qatar's World Cup campaign for all the wrong reasons. The tackle resulted in what appeared to be a serious leg fracture for the Canadian midfielder, and after VAR review, Madibo was shown a straight red card that reduced Qatar to nine men with more than 35 minutes still to play.

The midfielder was visibly distressed by the outcome of his challenge, holding his head in his hands as medical staff attended to the injured Koné on the pitch. Play stopped for several minutes as teammates formed a protective screen around Koné before he was stretchered off to a standing ovation from the Vancouver crowd.

Madibo's dismissal compounded an already dire situation for Qatar, who were trailing 3–0 and playing with ten men following Homam Al-Amin's earlier red card. The second sending-off ended any faint hope of a comeback and left his teammates facing an impossible task. Qatar conceded three more goals after his departure.
