Sabri Lamouchi has been sacked by the Tunisian federation after a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their World Cup opener. L'Équipe reports that Hervé Renard will replace the Frenchman. He is not the first head coach to lose his job during a World Cup.

Julen Lopetegui was removed in 2018 two days before the tournament began while in charge of Spain, after he agreed to join Real Madrid post-competition without informing federation president Luis Rubiales.

The 1998 edition in France saw three mid-tournament exits, compared to one in 1954. Tunisia dismissed Henryk Kasperczak after losses to England 0-2 and Colombia 0-1, then Ali Selmi oversaw a 1-1 draw with Romania.

Carlos Alberto Parreira, world champion with Brazil in 1994, had previously led Saudi Arabia from 1988 to 1990, lifting the Asian Cup. Back in charge in 1998, he was dismissed after defeats to France 0-4 and Denmark 0-1, with Mohammed Al Kharashy overseeing a 2-2 draw against South Africa.

Cha Bum-geun took South Korea through qualifying with six wins, one draw and one defeat, but the finals unravelled. After a 1-3 loss to Mexico and a 0-5 reverse to the Netherlands, he was sacked on 20 June. Kim Pyung-seok led the 1-1 draw with Belgium.

In 1954, Scotland manager Andy Beattie resigned after a 0-1 defeat to Austria, with only 13 players sent to Switzerland. His exit preceded a 0-7 loss to reigning champions Uruguay.
