CD Castellón could make it nine home wins in a row if they defeat Racing de Santander on Saturday night, as 28 February turns into 1 March.

El Periódico Mediterráneo notes that nine straight home wins in Spanish professional football are usually the preserve of the two or three dominant Primera clubs, and can take several seasons to compile. Castellón are on eight, a mark they have not reached in the top two tiers for many decades.

Their last nine-game home surge in the top flight came in 1942/43, when they finished fourth. At Sequiol they played 13 home matches, winning 10, drawing two and losing one. The run began on 17 November 1942 with a 3-0 over Zaragoza and ended with a 0-0 against Atlético Aviación on 27 March 1943, with Valencia 1-0, Celta 5-0, Espanyol 2-1, Oviedo 3-0, Sevilla 2-0, Real Madrid 3-0, Deportivo 3-0 and Betis 3-0 beaten in between.

In the second tier, the recently deceased Lucien Muller’s side opened 1971/72 by fortifying old Castalia with 12 straight home victories. From early September 1971 to late February 1972 they won every league match there, many by 1-0, including against Tenerife, Zaragoza, Valencia Mestalla, Hércules and Racing de Santander.

The current streak began with a stoppage-time comeback against Málaga, 2-1, then Real Sociedad B 5-4, Las Palmas 1-0, Mirandés 3-1 and Huesca 4-1. Three 2-0s followed against Leganés, Andorra and Deportivo at the renamed SkyFi Castalia. It has been three months of home cheer, edging towards four.
