It is 36 years since CD Castellón last beat Barcelona, a 1-0 win at Castalia on 4 February 1990. The milestone arrives as the albinegros enjoy one of their strongest periods in decades, harbouring realistic hopes of promotion.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the revival is underpinned by Haralabos Voulgaris’s stewardship after years of hardship, including seven seasons in Tercera.

Víctor Salvador settled the 1989/90 meeting from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute. The result carried weight against Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona, featuring an XI almost entirely from the Dream Team before the first of their four league titles.

Cruyff selected Zubizarreta, López Rekarte, Aloísio, Koeman, Bakero, Robert Fernández, Amor, Eusebio, Milla, Begiristain and Julio Salinas.

Luiche’s Castellón began with Emilio, Alfredo, Javi, Ximet, Ayúcar, Víctor Salvador, Fernández, Manchado, Raúl, Cabrera and José Hurtado.

Real Madrid won the title that season and Castellón stayed up, finishing 14th on 32 points. The club’s landmark night sits alongside other high points, including a Copa del Rey final.
