The Celtic Fans Collective has this afternoon reacted to the news that Celtic FC has allowed access to a Celtic player – Alex Oxlade Chamberlain – to the Liverpool FC fan media site The Anfield Wrap at a time when the club’s disgraceful ban on Celtic fan media continues indefinitely…

This ban was imposed when two sites including The Celtic Star were told not to bother going to Lennoxtown for a media conference with the manager that same day because the club had decided to ‘review’ fan media access. The manager at the time was Brendan Rodgers and all that the fan media had been ‘guilty’ of was asking questions about the summer transfer window in particular that the club didn’t want to continue.

They probably knew things were going to get worse. Behind the scenes they were plotting against Rodgers because they didn’t like the answers he was giving to the Celtic fan media questions over a serious of media conferences in the early part of the season.

Many of the Celtic sites and podcasts in the current generation of fan media signed that petition to the club after the transfer window closed last September asking for answers a number of pertinent questions. This was the first activity from the newly formed Celtic Fans Collective and the ban of Celtic fan media is likely to related to the emergence of that group.

There are certain rules at media conferences, one being you must always act professionally ie you’re not there as a supporter so when one of the podcaster chaps asked for a selfie with a player, Celtic PR stepped in to stop that happening. Absolutely fair enough. However it was the comment from the PR person about the money the podcast was making that raised eyebrows in the room. The implication being that podcast was making enough money from Celtic to pay their representatives enough to be professional.

The number of fan media outlets still on the fan media rota has reduced steadily since the peak around the covid season. Sites like The Celtic Blog, Video Celts, 67HailHail all dropped out for one reason another as did many of the podcasts – a few got banned along the way – but there was a core of about a dozen still involved who were all subjected to the ‘review’ which was implemented without any prior notice.

The Celtic Fans Collective have had this to say this afternoon on Celtic giving access to a Celtic player to a Liverpool Fan Media site while maintaining a ban on the Celtic Fan Media, including The Celtic Star.

“The decision by Celtic FC to allow fans of another club access to Lennoxtown to interview a Celtic player while banning our own fan media is the latest example of utter contempt supporters are currently held in.”

FAN MEDIA MATTERS. CELTIC KNOW THAT.

This week we’ve seen Liverpool Fan Media, The Anfield Wrap at Lennoxtown interviewing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Celtic fan media? Still banned.

That contradiction needs explained.

ENGAGEMENT MUST BE FAIR.

Celtic fan media should be treated with the same legitimacy as any other outlet.

There should be a clear and consistent approach to supporter access.

Anything less raises serious questions.

IT CAN’T WORK BOTH WAYS.

Celtic cannot be allowed to acknowledge the value of fan media while excluding their own supporters from it.

You cannot claim to improve communication while silencing your own support. The ban on fan media should be lifted with immediate effect.
