Cesar Peixoto is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ new head coach after visiting the club’s Compton training ground to sign his contract. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old arrived yesterday at the Championship club as it moved on from Rob Edwards, who was sacked.
Peixoto will leave Gil Vicente after 16 months in charge, having guided the Portuguese side to sixth in the top flight last season.
Social media leaks on Wednesday evening revealed a verbal agreement with Peixoto while Edwards was still in post. It is understood Edwards learned of developments via family while on holiday abroad, and had been working on Wolves’ transfer plans.
He was told by phone on Thursday morning that he had been dismissed, and it is understood some senior staff were unaware of the planned change. Fosun co-founder Guo Guangchang and Wolves chairman Nathan Shi worked with agent Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency to complete the deal.
Benfica had also shown interest before naming former Fulham boss Marco Silva. Mendes subsequently presented Peixoto, a Gestifute client, to Wolves, after which the decision was taken to dismiss Edwards. Peixoto is known for front-foot, attacking football, a style Shi signalled the club wanted in announcing Edwards’ exit.
