Cesar Peixoto is set to be unveiled as Wolves’ new head coach after arriving at the club’s Compton training ground yesterday to sign his deal. He will replace Rob Edwards, who was sacked on Thursday morning.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 46-year-old will leave Gil Vicente after 16 months, having guided the Portuguese side to sixth in the top flight last season.

News of a verbal agreement between Wolves and Peixoto surfaced on social media on Wednesday evening, while Edwards remained in post.

It is understood Edwards learned of the development from family members while on holiday abroad, and he had been using the break to plan transfer-window moves.

A phone call on Thursday morning then confirmed his dismissal, and some senior staff were said to be unaware of the planned change.

Fosun chairman and co-founder Guo Guangchang, together with Wolves chairman Nathan Shi, worked with agent Jorge Mendes and his Gestifute agency to secure Peixoto.

Benfica had also shown interest before appointing former Fulham boss Marco Silva. Mendes then presented Peixoto, a Gestifute client, to Wolves, after which the club decided to sack Edwards and proceed with their new boss.

Peixoto is known for front-foot, attacking football, which is believed to be among the attractions for the Championship club. In announcing Edwards’ exit, Shi hinted at a change in style and philosophy.
