Toulouse and Rennes have agreed a season-long loan for Charlie Cresswell, complete with a mandatory purchase clause that could bring TFC up to 28 million euros.

L'Équipe reports that the obligation to buy is set at 22.5 million euros, with a loan fee of two and a half million euros and bonuses of up to three million.

The 23-year-old, under contract until 2028, did not feature in Friday’s pre-season match against Real Sociedad, which finished 2-1.

Talks began early in the summer. Rennes were close to a deal in early July, but initially resisted Toulouse’s terms of 25 million euros plus three million in bonuses.

Significant and unexpected sales, including Emersonn to Ipswich Town for 28 million euros plus four million in add-ons, and an anticipated exit for Dayann Methalie to Sunderland, AC Milan or Newcastle, helped spread income over two seasons.

Crystal Palace, once eyeing a successor to Maxence Lacroix after his move to Chelsea, turned instead to Brest defender Raphaël Le Guen, 19, while Fulham was not the player’s preference.

Cresswell arrived in 2024 and quickly became a key figure for TFC over the last two seasons, raising hopes of a World Cup call that did not come. After a medical scheduled for Sunday, he will aim to revive that ambition with Rennes.
