Signing Miles Leaburn to a new deal is an astute piece of business for Charlton Athletic.
Signing Miles Leaburn to a new deal is an astute piece of business for Charlton Athletic, as former links to Chelsea help prove.
The young striker, who came through the Addicks' youth ranks, has penned a fresh three-year deal to keep him at the club well beyond their promotion back into the Sky Bet Championship.
Leaburn played his part in the Charlton side that reached the League One play-off final, beating Leyton Orient to secure their spot back in the second tier of English football.
He netted 10 times across all competitions, with six strikes coming in the 27 league games he played.
The youngster did not feature in the last few weeks of the campaign, but had a superb patch of form in late November and early December that helped secure vital points.
Leaburn scored five goals in as many games, including both goals in a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers and a goal and an assist in a victory of the same scoreline over Cambridge United.
The 6ft 7in striker has been eye-catching early in his career, averaging out at a goal every three appearances in his youthful career to date at Charlton.
Securing the 21-year-old's future remains at The Valley is an astute piece of business, ensuring he continues to develop at Charlton with the potential for him to evolve into a potentially large asset for the club in the years to come.
In the Addicks' announcement of Leaburn's new contract, boss Nathan Jones said: "We’re delighted because we believe that Miles has a big future. First and foremost he has to stay injury free, trust his body, trust himself and show the ability he has because he’s a magnificent footballer with a fantastic profile."
That is the key for Leaburn, as the sky may well be the limit for the young striker if he can stay away from the treatment table during his continued spell at Charlton.
Injuries have been an issue for the youngster, with that stifling his growth at times over recent seasons.
Premier League gaints Chelsea, who are making waves on the global stage at the FIFA Club World Cup, and the well-run Brentford, have both been linked to Leaburn in the past.
In October 2023, The Daily Mirror reported that the two Premier League clubs were among the outfits keeping tabs on the young front-man.
The interest from top-flight teams showcases why tying Leaburn down on a long-term deal is a smart piece of business for the club where his dad Carl once played for.
If he remains injury-free, there is no doubting that the striker can become one of Charlton's top assets.
In the process, securing a hefty transfer fee for the Addicks, something that will rubber stamp the contract extension of 2025 as a crucial decision.
