A Chelsea win at Wembley against Man City would mean breaking a bad run and cheering the fans up – and there would be a European bonus too.

Simon Johnson’s piece for the Athletic about Chelsea’s win over Leeds in the FA Cup semi final over the weekend has some interesting notes as they set up a final against Manchester City.

He points out the Blues’ horrific recent record at the home of football:

“Wembley used to be regarded as [Chelsea’s] second home, given the frequency with which they would see victories there,” Johnson wrote.

“However, the last time they played a final at England’s national stadium, the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in 2024, they became the first club to lose six domestic finals in a row (three league cups, three FA Cups).”

The reward would be more than just breaking that nasty run and earning a first domestic trophy in eight years – it would mean a place in the Europa League too.

It would be quite the amazing turnaround. To go from the low of Tuesday night to a trophy win just a few weeks later truly would be mind blowing.
