Chelsea have still not found a breakthrough in their bid to sign RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, despite Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff getting involved in the negotiations (Philipp Hinze).
The Blues must first make sales before a transfer to Stamford Bridge is possible for the 22-year-old who bagged 11 goals and eight assists last term.
Chelsea have been trying to get a deal for Simons over the line for some time, but nothing has materialised.
The West Londoners must get rid of players like Tyrique George, Nicolas Jackson, Axel Disasi, Ben Chiwell, Raheem Sterling, Christopher Nkunku, and others.
However, suitors know Chelsea have a bloated squad and are waiting to approach these players with late loan moves, leaving the Blues in a precarious position.
Chelsea actually need Simons’ profile in midfield. He is a ‘difference-maker‘.
The Blues have progressive passers and defensive specialists in the engine room. Unfortunately, they do not have a progressive career.
They need someone who can take the ball and drive them upfield, especially when faced with deep blocks.
Chelsea identified Simons as a potential fix, but signing him has proven a haggle, even though there is optimism that a deal should go through before the close of the window.
Chelsea could approach the Simons deal with a smarter strategy by leveraging Leipzig’s own interest in their players.
The German side has been tracking Nkunku, who previously shone for them, and promising winger George.
Packaging either or both into negotiations could help bridge the financial gap and sweeten discussions, ensuring Chelsea aren’t forced into cut-price sales elsewhere.
Leipzig know Nkunku’s qualities first-hand and would view George as a valuable long-term project.
By structuring the transfer this way, Chelsea could reduce the cash burden, offload fringe options, and finally secure Simons.
