Chelsea’s Champions League campaign begins in Bavaria tonight, and the build-up has been dominated by the return of Cole Palmer. After a frustrating spell on the sidelines, the forward is ready to reclaim his place in Enzo Maresca’s side for what already feels like a pivotal test.
Palmer has endured a stop-start beginning to the season. His only start so far came in the goalless draw with Crystal Palace on the opening weekend before a groin injury interrupted his momentum. That setback forced him out of wins over West Ham and Fulham, as well as England’s World Cup qualifiers.

But Saturday’s trip to Brentford offered a timely reminder of his importance. Introduced from the bench, Palmer struck Chelsea’s opener in a 2-2 draw, showing both sharpness and composure. Maresca is expected to reward that impact with a starting role at the Allianz Arena.
Marc Cucurella looks set to resume at left-back, with Reece James or Malo Gusto in contention to start on the opposite flank. Wesley Fofana is likely to drop out after featuring at Brentford. In midfield, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández provide the stability, allowing Palmer the licence to create further forward.
The Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte, who made his debut at Brentford, could be the one to make way for Palmer’s return. Joao Pedro will lead the attack despite concerns over full fitness.
Estevao, who missed the short trip to Brentford through illness, has travelled with the Chelsea squad. His involvement would add a layer of unpredictability in wide areas. “Estevao has overcome illness to travel for a high-profile clash in Bavaria,” confirmed the club ahead of the trip.
However, Chelsea remain without several key names. Liam Delap is sidelined until December with a hamstring issue, while Romeo Lavia and Benoît Badiashile are closing in on returns. Mykhailo Mudryk is also unavailable, and Dario Essugo faces a long rehabilitation after thigh surgery.
