Chelsea have identified one position they’re keen to strengthen with a “starting level” player this summer, after a difficult season.

Chelsea’s lack of solidity at the back has been a problem for years, and was even more of an issue this season after Levi Colwill picked up an injury that has so far ruled him out of the whole campaign.

Now, with Trevoh Chalobah also out, we fear for these final few weeks. Wesley Fofana looks like he doesn’t want to be here, Mamadou Sarr looks unprepared for this level, Benoit Badiashile has never shown any consistency of form or fitness.

Chelsea target starting quality defender this summer

It should be no surprise that, according to Football.London’s Bobby Vincent, Chelsea are “prioritising signing a centre-back in the upcoming transfer window.

They want to “add a starting level central defender to their ranks.” That’s promising, but when you look at the record of these sporting directors in signing players in that position… let’s just say there’s a reason we’re in the mess we’re in.

A starting quality defender is not going to come cheap, especially if they try to get someone under 25. Expect the rumours to fire up pretty soon.

Despite these plans to sign a new defender, Chelsea won’t be letting Josh Acheampong go anywhere, according to the latest reports.
