Chelsea have won the Club World Cup, and the individual winners from the tournament are almost too many to count: Pedro Neto, Enzo Maresca, Cole Palmer, Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, the sporting directors, the owners… they all come out of this month far better than they went in.
But not everyone can be a winner, and there is without doubt one massive loser from the whole trip: Nicolas Jackson.
It was supposed to be his chance to make amends for a red card against Newcastle at the end of the season which almost cost his team their Champions League place for next year. Instead, it couldn’t have gone worse. He picked up another red in our second group game, and then found himself demoted first behind new boy Liam Delap, then behind even newer boy Joao Pedro.
Jackson ends the tournament as our third choice striker, not having played a minute in the final.
Sky’s Dharmesh Sheth on Nicolas Jackson suitors.
It’s no wonder the rumours about a potential transfer exit for him are going up a gear. Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth has been writing this morning that a “number of clubs” are keen on the forward, with Manchester United top of the list.
The Red Devils are focused on making sales and trying to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. But if that doesn’t work out, it sounds like Jackson is their next option.
As reported before, Aston Villa are another potential destination for the striker, with their manager Unai Emery the man who gave Jackson his debut.
There are some doubts about Villa’s PSR and FFP situation, and whether they would be able to pay for Jackson, however.
AC Milan are also linked, but their offers have clearly fallen short of our valuation so far.
