A new manager being appointed at a big club always means one thing – long reads in the newspapers about his “in tray,” the priority items he needs to sort out.

Xabi Alonso has just had the in-tray treatment from the Daily Mail. There’s some really interesting stuff in there on multiple counts. A major part of that will be “chopping the deadwood,” as they call it. The bomb squad is gone, but there remain plenty of players who don’t have a future at Chelsea.

Chelsea have six who need to go – and it could be more

Kieran Gill’s piece points to six of them right off the bat: “among those we might see sold include Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Filip Jorgensen and Axel Disasi.”

Those all feel pretty likely. Gill adds that Alonso might also want to sell Wesley Fofana, although the defender insists he’s “not interested in leaving.”

That would certainly be a strong starting point, and we just hope there’s enough interest in some of these guys that sales are possible.

In other news…

Geovany Quenda is finally set to complete his transfer to Chelsea, a year in the making. He thinks he has a unique chance to impress Xabi Alonso in preseason.

Calum McFarlane has claimed that Chelsea aren’t far off the likes of Man City, despite the gap in performances and points.
