New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has a lot of practical, day to day stuff to get to grips with when he takes over at the club.
But there’s also some more nebulous tasks he has to take on, first and foremost creating a better “culture” in his dressing room and in the squad. They’re mentally weak, and they are too comfortable knowing that “player power” can see off any manager who they don’t like.
Kieran Gill’s piece for the Daily Mail points out that, after Liam Rosenior’s sacking last month, not a single player posted a message of thanks or well-wished him on social media afterwards. That tells you a lot, given how often some of them are posting.
Considering how flagrantly they had given up playing for him on the pitch, it’s another reminder of the toxic culture that’s taken hold at the club. We’re all hoping Alonso has the authority and the interpersonal skills to sort that out.
Alonso’s other main concern is which players to sell – there’s a growing list of them he likely want to get rid of this summer.
Geovany Quenda is finally set to complete his transfer to Chelsea, a year in the making. He thinks he has a unique chance to impress Xabi Alonso in preseason.
